Check cavity clearance before embedding a part

Separate vertical space, horizontal fit and toolhead clearance.

Compare corresponding measurements

For a round magnet, compare diameter with cavity diameter. For a hex nut, compare the same across-flats dimensions and inspect the corners. A single width check cannot prove that unlike shapes fit. Measure several real parts when manufacturing variation matters, then model a cavity for the actual hardware.

Vertical fit has two checks

The cavity must be deep enough for the insert and your chosen clearance. At the pause, the insert also needs to stay below the path the toolhead will use. InsertPlan reports the insert top relative to the last completed layer as well as the cavity depth. Passing a nominal depth calculation does not compensate for a part that is tilted or resting on loose material.

Use a small calibration print

  • Print the same cavity orientation and material as the final part.
  • Check that the insert seats without deforming the print.
  • Verify retention without leaving material in the closing path.
  • Confirm any adhesive is suitable for the materials and operating temperature.
  • Inspect the roof and the part after a successful resume.
